What is a Genetic Counselor?

A genetic counselor is a health care professional with specialized training in medical genetics and counseling. Certified genetic counselors have graduate level degrees in Genetic Counseling and have passed board certification exams administered by the American Board of Genetic Counselors.

What can I expect from a meeting with a Genetic Counselor?

Each genetic counseling session is unique. Our discussion will be tailored to your needs. We'll start by discussing any questions or concerns you might have about your health or the health of your family members, take a detailed family health history, and discuss what genetic testing may be appropriate for you.

If you have results from a genetic test that you would like help interpreting or understanding, we will go through your genetic variants one-by-one in a way that is meaningful and accessible to you.

I don't have a genetic condition, and neither does anyone in my family. Is genetic counseling still necessary?

Anyone can benefit from a discussion with a genetic counselor. Each of us has approximately 30,000 genes, and they all work in concert to instruct every function of the body. Mutations, or changes, in your genes can cause health problems for you, and/or can put your children and future generations at risk of health problems. By understanding the genetic risks that you have, you can be proactive about taking care of yourself and your family.

Do you take insurance?
